The context
Seeds of Earth was Big Byte Studio’s most ambitious project — a space-set action RPG with eight contributors across roughly two years. I led production on it. It is also the project I chose to cancel, and that decision is exactly why it’s on this site.
The hardest call a producer makes
When the scope outran the time and funding we actually had, I made the disciplined call to stop — and I traced the root cause honestly rather than blaming circumstance: we over-engineered systems instead of shipping with what we had.
Cancelling a project you’ve poured two years into is one of the harder things a producer does. But knowing when to stop — and being able to name why, without flinching — is the same judgment that keeps the projects you don’t cancel from quietly dying the same way. Showing a cancelled project on a portfolio is deliberate: it’s evidence of the senior call, not an omission.
Gaps to fill: the exact dates (start/cancel year) and the target platform — I’ve placed reasonable estimates. Correct me and I’ll update.
Outcomes
- Led production with 8 contributors across ~2 years
- Made the call to cancel when scope exceeded available time and funding
- Root cause named honestly: over-engineering systems instead of shipping with what we had
